In the industry of flexible packaging, the terms and laminated trilaminado tend to raise doubts among manufacturers...

Introduction

The plastic resins for process the key factor to guarantee quality, efficiency and profitability in the industrial processing of plastics. In the industry of plastics processing, the difference between a high quality finished product and a costly waste resides on a single factor: the correct selection of the plastic resin. Not all plastic raw materials work the same. Each industrial process —either extrusion, injection, blow molding or rotational molding— requires specific properties, such as the rate of flow (MFI), the impact resistance or dimensional stability.
A choice precipitated resin can result in critical failures: cracks in the molding, surface finishes, irregular, cycle times are excessively long or, worse still, the failure to meet the technical specifications of the final product. Their efficiency and profitability depend on this decision.
In TOMOMI GROUP, we understand that you need not only a supplier, but a technical partner. We offer a professional guide to break down the essential characteristics of the resins most common, and ensure that your production process to work with the raw material right from the first pellet.

Resins Key by Manufacturing Process

Extrusion: Movies, Profiles and Pipes
Extrusion is a process that requires resins with excellent resistance to the merger and the ability of drag to keep the uniformity of the profile or the movie, without tearing.

  • Resin Key: Polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE) and Polypropylene (PP). The LLDPE is vital to films of high resistance to puncture and the HDPE rigid pipes.
  • Applications: flexible Packaging, film, agricultural, pipes, pressure and without pressure.

Injection: Accuracy and Speed
The injection requires resins of high fluidity (high MFI) that fill quickly complex molds without leaving marks. It prioritizes the rigidity, the thermal resistance and the aesthetic finish.

  • Resin Key: Polypropylene (PP), ABS, Polystyrene (PS), HDPE. The ABS is preferred for its resistance to impact and aesthetic finish (electronics, automotive).
  • Applications: Caps, rigid packaging, electronic components, toys, technical parts.

Blow: Rigid Packaging and Crack Resistance
The blow molding process requires high tensile strength and rigidity to prevent the collapse of the preform during blow molding, in addition to a great chemical resistance to the final packaging.

  • Resin Key: HDPE (for stiffness and packaging for chemicals/detergents), PET (bottle transparent). The HDPE is the standard for drums and containers of large volume.
  • Applications: Bottles, cans, industrial packaging, fuel tanks.

Rotational moulding: Hollow Parts without Tension
The rotational molding requires a Polyethylene powder (usually PE degree rotational) with a distribution grading very specific to ensure a merger and uniform bonding to the mold walls. The UV resistance is crucial for products from outside.

  • Resin Key: Mainly Polyethylene of Medium/High Density (MDPE/HDPE) grade-rotational.
  • Applications: water storage Tanks, drums, trash cans, outdoor furniture.

Critical factors of Selection

Before ordering your next raw material, answers to these technical questions key:

Processability (MFI): The Rate of flow must be adjusted to your team. A MFI high is good for Injection (fills up fast), but poor for Extrusion (loses viscosity).

Mechanical properties: What you Need to impact strength (ABS, PC), flexibility (LDPE) or stiffness (HDPE, PS)?

Thermal behavior: What is the maximum service temperature of the final product? This defines if it is viable to use PP (more resistant) or PE.

Chemical compatibility: Does The packaging will be in contact with acids, alkalis and oils? The Resistance to Environmental Stress Cracking (ESCR) is key.

Making the right decision is an imperative technical and financial. In TOMOMI GROUP, the expertise of our team goes beyond marketing: we will be your guide to understand in depth the technical specifications and the comparative resins to optimize their costs and the quality of its production.
